My new house has a fireplace, so I'll actually be able to burn a yule log! It should be oak. Do you think I can find that at Lowe's?

Yeah. Lowe's does. And Home Depot. They both only sell it in store, not online. I already bought it.
Ahhh, the traditional Yule log is from the Oak tree :) You "can use other types of wood though". People that aren't able to burn a yule log can make the Yule cake. But, some people do both :)
I put up a discussion on the Yule log so that you can read what each wood will symbolize for what a person or family would like to see come into their life for the following year ahead.
The only log they had was birch, but I read up on it and birch is a perfectly acceptable wood for a Yule log.
That's ok Kitty. In the article I put up, it says that the birch signifies new beginnings. lol. That's like synchronicity for you Kitty, lol.
