Vodou and the Dead

Met Kafou "Closing the Infernal Gates of the Damned"
Usually in order to work with and approach Met Kafou there must be a correct and formal introduction though I have been lucky
enough to have him in my life as my Met Tet and have witnessed some of the amazing powerful feats that this magnificent deity can
perform. Among crafts that work with the Lwa
Met Kafou gives: Bocors, Dark Magicians and sorcerers their power but he can also
take this power away. As such Vodouissants in some occasions will make offerings at the cross roads him to leave them alone or to
“close the gates of Hell” If you feel you have been cursed then you can ask Kafou for help by “taking your problems with him.” To perform this rite, you first need a red flannel or draw string bag like what is often used for gris gris or mojo bags. Next place 3 coins inside like a £ or a $ for example. Going forward you need to acquire some soil from either a; hospital, jail or courtroom and place it in the bag along with the coins. The next thing you need to add to the bag is a pinch of Cayenne Pepper
before finally waiting for mid night to take it to the cross roads.
Please note it’s very important that you wear or take with you a protective talisman before going to such a magickal place at night.
When you get to the cross roads say out loud but with respect “Oh Met Kafou I humbly petition you to take your dark spirits away
from me. I want you to close your infernal gates so that no one may send your dark spirits against me. I have brought you a gift and request that you relent”.
Next turn around, throw the bag over your shoulder but make sure it lands off the road then walk away WITHOUT LOOKING BACK.
Throwing the bag away represents throwing your problems away and you must take a different rout home than the one you took to
get there. When you get home take cleanse yourself and your home before retiring to bed.

Eggs helps a lot in destroying negative energy, badluck, and works against you to set you up to fail. It also break the bondage and attachment of negative dark energies. 1_for badluck put it in your bathwater but don't break it when bathing. After bathing take it to any crossroads and break it2. Maman Bridgette also known as:
Maman Brigitte also written Gran Brigitte, Grann Brigitte, Manman, Manman Brigit, and Maman Brijit,
Nation: Ghede Lwa.
Married to: Barron Samedi
Offerings rum infused with hot peppers and other things similar to the Barrons tastes such as cigars and skulls for example. She also likes fire, grave stones and crosses (crosses are symbolic of the cross roads not any one religion on deity)
Like Barron Samedi she's said to have quite a crude and carnal sense of humour and often uses bad language to express herself but at the same time is also very strict when it comes to showing both her and the dead respect.
Maman Brigitte is immensely strong, protecting the cemeteries and the dead.
It is said that in Haiti, She is called upon when the first woman is buried in a cemetery, and is mistress to the deceased.

Barron Samedi!!!!!
Barron Samedi, Bawon Samdi (translated from Hatian Creole means "The Barron of Saturday"
Colours: black, white, purple.
Day: Saturday
Specialises in: Magic of all matters, Divination, luck, money, protection, baneful magic, necromancy, wisdom, burial rights for religious followers of Vodou.
He's a Ghede Lord and Lord of the Cemerty, he was a human that ascended to god hood through deification after death and was also a 32nd degree Mason.
Can be seen as both a benevolent and malevolent force and commands the respect of those around him with authority of needs be. Though Barron Samedi also can be known to be quite an entertaining guest with a seemingly endless repertoire of dirty jokes and a love for, women, drugs and of course Rum.
Offerings: Rum, Cigars, coffee, chilli peppers,coins, skulls, black candles, sweets, coconut flakes, drugs.
Likes: people respecting and caring for the dead.
He's quite sexual so he likes women a lot too.
Dislikes: disrespect of the dead, disrespect of him, people abusing women and children, disharmony and theft from grave yards.
Sacred places: cross roads and cemetery.
"It is said that if you find the oldest grave in any grave yard, there you will find the home of Barron Samedi"
According to belief among Haitian and some other Vodou practitioners it is said that the first man or woman burried in ANY grave yard or sacred burriel ground become the Baron and Bridgette of that place.
All the Barons serve as a sort of authority figure in the Guede world and have sometimes being perceived as wearing Masonic Aprons.
Interesting fact: The Dictator Papa Doc was known to have served Baron Samedi, it is said he would often call him down for assistance and his reign of terror lasted 30 some years.
Met Agwe
Today I bring you a highly respected and revered Lwa. This Lwa is responsible for water, the sea, Rivers and the awesome and immense power of the storm.
I feel I've heard this Lwa roar as one day this year we had about two weeks of sticky horrible hot weather with no rain in site.
I called his name and said something in the tone of a spoiled brat complaining about the weather. Later that day I went to go out and as soon as I stepped off my porch "CRACK, bang, boom, Roar!!!" the spy pretty much roared at me then torrential rain (not been forecasted) descended upon me as a whisper in my mind told me "be carful what you wish for and watch how your taking to who"
Sufficed to say I immediately apologised to the Lwa for being a brat and thanked them for the rain.
It is my humble pleasure and great honour to give you a Lwa of the elements today.
So without further delay I give you the one the only Owner of the Waters
Met Agwe!!!!!
Met Agwe (translated in English from Hatian Creole roughly means Owner of the Waters)
Responsibility: The sea, fish, aquatic plants, the rains also manages storms.
As he is the owner of the water he's revered by fishermen as their patron Lwa.
Married to: Erzulie Freda, La Siren and is also rumoured to have had an affair with Ayieda Wedo.
Offerings to Agwe are placed on a hand made raft and either floated out to sea or down river.
Colour: Blue.
Synchronised with St Ulrich.
Also associated with: St John and the Mississippi River.

Vodou Basics for Beginners Candles and Their Uses

So we sort of touched on this briefly in another post I wrote about "Illumination" and offering the spirits heat and light.
However I feel I could mention a bit more about candles them selves and how I understand them to be used in Vodou.
7 Day Candles
So there are a few different ways candles can be used in vodou and many vodouissants prefer to use 7 day candles, which are about 8 and a half to 9 inches tall, 2 to 3 inches wide and are encased in a sort of glass sleeve or "chimney". These candels are favoured as they're designed to be burned for 7 days and some may used again and again in various rites and rituals until they're spent.
In Vodou we're used to working with what we have and with limited resources so any remains from candles used in rituals such as the chimney it's self can be saved to create Wanga (another magical item well perhaps cover later)
Again 7 day candles being quite large can be decorated to honour the specific Lwa or spirit your offering it to as well as there being a wide range of them available for Saints and even some 7 day candles with the psalms on them making the 7 day candle a diverse and popular choice among many.
Sabbath Candles
Sabbath candles are smaller candles also used in Vodou. For example at the beginning of a traditional Vodou ritual a white Sabbath candle can be lit to shine divine light on the proceedings.
This same candle will then be used to in turn light the 7 day candle or candles.
Also in rituals, rites and when saluting the Lwa the lead Mambo or Houngan will be followed by someone carrying a sabbath candle.
These candles are also placed near near the entrance, drums and veves on the floor.
Bougies
The Petro Lwa and the Guede Lwa are not saluted with Sabbath candles.
Instead traditionally in Vodou we use a twisted piece of coloured card that's tightly twisted and dipped in bees wax called a Bougie.
For the Petro Lwa we use a yellow Bougie and for the Guede Lwa we use a black Bougie.
In the salutes the Bougie or Sabbath candle is held in the left hand and the correct Libation offering in the right.

Vodou Basics for Beginners: Sacred Dance
by Edward Morrow August 5, 2019It is said among many Vodouissants that instead of praying to the Lwa they dance to honour them.
Ritual dance helps the practitioner get caught up in the hypnotic and powerful rhythm of the drums which in turn helps us to become open to receive possession by the Lwa.
Now there are many many dance steps and also ceremonial way to salute the Lwa and each appropriate Nation of Lwa with very specific movements are performed for each stage of the Ceremony. The drums them selves are saluted by the "Poteau-Mitan" which can be a spirit or a Mambo or Houngahn of Asogwe standing. To do this they will turn right x3 left x3 and finally right x3 this is called "vire".
In some cases fifteen items may also be used in the salutation of the spirit such as a machete for Ogun for example.
So one of the most famous dances in traditional Vodou is the Yanvalou and to perform this the practitioners keep a bent position and kind of rotate their back from the base up on kind of a snake like fashion. Now it's believed among some practitioners, especially those that also practise yoga that this movement stimulates a Serpentine or kundalini like energy flow within the body.
The Yanvalou dance is performed during a traditional Rada rite and I have found a video on youtube as an example of this for you.
There are other dances used for many other spirits but for now any budding practitioner should probably keep it cool.

Simbi

Simbi
Magick is known to reside in many places throughout nature and not all
of them are obvious to the uninitiated or discernible the naked eye.
It is in these hidden places, these "places that exist between places" where there is only shadow and water that Simbi likes to hide. He can be quite an elusive Lwa who is known to be difficult to find but one you manage to befriend and get to know him he can prove prove to be an immensely powerful ally.
The symbology behind Simbi is that he can be found "where flat land meets forest" "where salt water meets fresh" any where where to apparent opposites meet and this is due to the duality in the Lwa himself. He's seen as both Petro and Rada which is termed as "having a foot in both worlds" and again this term sheds some light on the symbology and meanings behind his preferred places.
Now there are a few theories on the origins of the Simbis. Some practitioners believe their roots can be traced to the Zemi spirits of the Tanio and Arawak tribes and associate them with their gods Yucahu who was Lord of the sea and Atabey who was a fertility goddess which is why some think it is said he lives in the salt water and the fresh. Another god associated with him by some is Maboya who was a much feared spirit of the night that brought famine by killing crops and had to be regularly appeased that some believe bring on Simbis Darker aspect "Simbi Makaya".
Simbi Makaya is a Lwa that's a master of Magick and the Metaphysical and is served and worked with by secret societies and those that follow the Sanpwel.
Others claim Simbi has origins in African in the French Congo and associate him with an join lured and revered spirit that ruled over the elemental forces of rain and lightening.
Regardless of the deific mask you give him tho one thing is certain, Simbi in any of his forms is a pure power house and certainly a Lwa you want in your squad.
As he can be quite tricky to connect with the process of working with him may be a slow one. Often people leave offerings in his favourite places to sort of draw and coax him out. When you do this just shout out loud something like "Simbi I've brought you a gift and my respect. This is for you" then leave the offering.
Sacred Day: Nov 30th
Offerings: white rum, lemon drops on a small white China plate, spring water, saltwater mixed, chicken sacrifice and in some places for specific protection a turtle sacrifice though he'll be happy with some rum and candles in the right colours.
Colours: Some use red and green, some use red and black.
Simbi Dlo: Some use red and turquoise and some use green and blue.
Simbi Gangan: some just use red and some use red and blue.
Simbi Andezo: Red and white.
Simbi Anpaka: White and green.
ST synchronisation: ST Andrew, The three Kings or ST Borromeo
Specialities, protection, technical issues including reduced risk of equipment failure and skills associated with such things. He's also known to help speed up spiritual work as well as helping people avoid unwanted attention.
